Trench Warfare Part 1

Artilllery fire, dirt, blood. The reality of trench warfare. Trenches is an exellent terrain element. It will add to the tactic of gameplay and to your table. The element is a great addition to the World War I and II wargames.
To be honest i were looking to make trenches long ago. Going take photos and add commentaries for anyone who will need it.

World War I Trench Warfare части 1 и 2 издательства Osprey.

The beautiful detail about trenches - you cant make them "wrong". Just because there is no "right" way to do it. Countless miles of trenches were dug using what materials available. Good if your logistics provide supplies. In many situations wood from nearby forest are as well good. Osprey World War I Trench Warfare books gives great overview of the topic.

Lets assume our troops had much times and resources to fortify positions. So we going to need much wood. Anzor made great tutorial on woodwork in his blog. Gonna add some experience of my own to his mastery.

All we need is metal brush, pencil and two awls (one bigger than the other), as well as loads of PVC. I get myself a bad metal brush, too soft for the task. Next time Ill get a better one.

First of all make plan of elements of you trenches on PVC. Place elements in a fashion, where the wood will face the same direction in all elements. Precut the parts of trenches but dont cut them completely. Then we use bigger awl to make separate wooden planks.

Next add some extra texture so elements. Put pressure on separate wooden planks by something solid and flat. This will add depth to the elements, make them look like hand made wooden floor/walls.

We use metal brush to make wooden texture. Just travel the brush from one end of wooden planks to the other and apply some pressure to it. After that use smaller awl to deepen separate scratches, make them more visible.

When wood are ready - cut off the elements. Glue walls under a right angle to the floor, add some girders.

Result so far. Walls are about the height of chest or shoulders of 28mm figure. Trenches were intentionally made wide. In reality trenches were rarely wider than 1-1,5 meters. But for the ease of wargaming we decided to make trenches, where two figures on standard bases can stand side by side. If you like historical accuracy - just make trenches a little bit wider than miniature base.
Next time I will make earth embankments for the trenches, maybe some sandbags, and more complex trench elements like angles and crossroads.

Reinforcements Arrive

Got some free time due to being ill, which I used for painting. Originally my Chain of Command force were modelled after 6th Fallschirmjager Regiment and few 17th SS Division reinforcements. Since Bolt Action is now played in local gaming club, with a wide variety of armies, I decided to add some more support to field my fallschirmjager on different theatres of war.

For a long time these skull bases were lying around my table. Painted them just for lulz. Maybe they will add for the Pulp scenery.

Irregular Fun with Lasers

Felt like sharing something in here. Is someone even reading this place?

20th century "murica" style house test piece. Plan to make some to the local gaming club. Can also take some comissions on them here and there.

A little tugboat I named Firefly. A work horse for Pulp Alley style games. Never know when you need a boat.

And a few more test pieces. Wound markers and Chain of Command morale tablet amond them.

Chain of Command

Yesterday i was able to play a CoC game with Sergei aka Voize. It was good to recover rules of this awesome wargame in my memory. So there is a quick recollection of the events.
For this time my fallschirmjager faced british infantry, reinforced by brits paratroopers. Germans was attacking in flank attack scenario.
Our table setup:

By the end of control phase british forces seized control of red cafe building and a living house in their quarter. Fallschirmjagers jump-off points scattered on the table around brits, but the ones i actually used in game was in garden and near the corn field barn.

Btitish started to deploy on the battlefield first, laying in overwatch for coming germans. Fallschirmjager however managed to take the barn and garden house with just one man as a casualty.

Arriving germans put their MGs to work, waiting for artillery obresver to fix on the target.

Artillery support was... lets say uneffective as british ended turn soon after. Using the advantage of the blind spot of the building my forces started to push brits. Only to be caught in enemy artillery barrage. Sadly this one also done little effect.

As the time passed with many teams broken and few officers killed by enemy fire, british defeat became obvious

Fallschirmjager did a great job with only few men dead among their ranks. Then something happened. I think leutenant just wanted an iron cross for himself or something. Hew led an assault on the living house occupied by british paratroops squad and remains of infantry squad.

Close combat is hell. As the result of this fight british forces routed from the table and fallschirmjager squad nearly wiped out. The overall casualties of the sides was comparable, with 2/3 german losses coming from that last asaault.

Taking a break from Savage Worlds and Warmachine was refreshing. Should do it every once in a while. Thanks for a great game Sergei!
